Forty-one Chinese American World War II Veterans from Southern California will be presented the United States Congressional Gold Medal, the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions, on Monday, May 31, 2021 at 10:00 am PDT in a virtual ceremony on the Chinese American Citizens Alliance YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/CACANational

The Memorial Day Southern California Regional Ceremony program will include guest speakers U.S. Representatives Judy Chu and Ted Lieu, presentation of Congressional Gold Medals by distinguished retired military officers to the living veterans or the families of recently passed veterans listed above, and a roll call recognition of deceased veterans who were registered to receive the Congressional Gold Medal.

The Chinese American WWII Veterans Recognition Project is a program of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance (C.A.C.A.) and the National Chinese American Citizens Alliance Community Involvement Fund. The Project has committed to recognizing Chinese American WWII Veterans on its website, http://caww2.org, and providing gold medal replicas to all veteran families who registered prior to February 28, 2021. While the gold medal production backlog at the U.S. Mint has delayed distribution of medals, the Project anticipates full availability in the near future. In the meantime, veteran families may enjoy the many stories posted on the website and the past programs on the YouTube channel.

Collectively, Chinese American WWII Veterans were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by the United States Congress in a virtual national ceremony on December 9, 2020, 75 years after the end of WWII. The presentation was a culmination of the Chinese American WWII Veterans Recognition Project’s work following the bipartisan passage of the Congressional Gold Medal Act signed into law on December 20, 2018 in recognition of the Chinese Americans’ valiant service. Despite barriers to citizenship and equality, Chinese American veterans served with dignity and honor while facing discrimination and prejudice at home and in the military.
